The Digital Hub launch latest artist in residence programme

The Digital Hub has welcomed its latest artist in residence as she begins her 6-month programme in Ireland’s largest digital enterprise cluster based in Dublin’s Liberties in Dublin 8. Award-winning artist Elaine Hoey will bring her creativity and skill in creating immersive, interactive based installations to The Digital Hub.

Elaine specialises in creating experiences which explore our evolving relationship with the screen and digital practices and the politics of digital humanity. As part of her residency Elaine will program a series of events early next year that explore the discourse surrounding the ethics and challenges of AI in art and business.

A graduate of the National College of Art and Design Elaine’s work has been exhibited nationally in the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hibernian Academy, National Sculpture Factory and the Science Gallery among others. She also has an impressive global footprint, with her work being displayed in Paris, Milan, Bucharest and Seoul. Elaine has also won numerous awards, including the R.C. Lewis-Crosby Award at the 2017 RD Visual Arts Awards, the RDS Culturel Irlandais Residency Award in Paris, 2017 and the Taylor Art Award at the 2016 RDS Visual Arts Awards.

Elaine recently had a series of specially commissioned live virtual-reality performances in Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) which explored national identity politics and the nature of physical and non-physical borders. The performance was acted out by live actors in a remote setting and viewed by visitors through VR headsets.

Commenting on Elaine Hoey’s residency Fiach Mac Conghail, CEO of The Digital Hub, said:

“Elaine’s work and practice has placed her at the heart of the discourse between arts technology and surveillance. We are looking forward to working with Elaine as our next artist-in-residence.  Her work with digital technologies is a natural fit for The Digital Hub and it will be important for us to learn from artists like Elaine about the world of surveillance and AI.”

Elaine Hoey said:

“I am really pleased to be joining The Digital Hub as their artist in residence. Given their existing experience with the digital space I look forward to the inspiration which can be gained during my time here. Exploring our relationship with the digital world grows increasingly important as technology continues to be a mainstay of everyday life, so I’m grateful to The Digital Hub to have a platform to continue my work.”

Elaine will be The Digital Hub’s third artist in residence in as many years, following successful partnerships with photographic and video artist Kate Nolan in 2019 and artist and photographer, Mandy O’Neill in 2018. The artist in resident programme is a key part of The Digital Hub’s mission of creating a diverse and creative technology quarter in Dublin 8.

The Digital Hub’s support of the arts is further reflected in their sponsorship of this year’s Dublin Fringe Festival and Dublin Theatre Festival. The Digital Hub also runs community learning initiatives which allow local young people to be creative while developing skills to support their future careers. The Liber8 Music Project, run with BIMM Dublin, gives young people who may have limited exposure to music and digital media, an opportunity to immerse themselves in a creative programme, whilst learning 21st century skills, such as teamwork, and critical thinking skills. Screen8, run with the Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF) gives its young participants an opportunity to develop filmmaking skills and talents. They learn all about the filmmaking process and will have the opportunity to create and crew their own short film, whilst being guided by filmmaking professionals.
