See St. Patrick’s Tower at The Digital Hub in green for St. Patrick’s Day – 15th to 18th March
St. Patrick’s Tower will be lit in green from Friday, 15th to Monday, 18th March. If you are in the Thomas Street area of the Liberties take a photo and share your snaps with us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook – you’ll find us there by searching @TheDigitalHub.
St. Patrick’s Tower is well-loved in the Liberties community and anyone working at The Digital Hub will have seen tourists taking pictures and asking questions about the structure, which is not immediately identifiable as a Windmill today, without its sails.
The windmill was built in 1805; the date appears on a stone over the main doorway. It was used to grind corn for Roe’s whiskey distillery until about 1860, when the grinding process was powered by steam. Its known locally as St. Patrick’s Tower, as an outline of the figure of St. Patrick tops the windmill’s copper dome.
