Beta Festival will feature a unique exhibition of Irish-based and international artists spanning the material and digital, the real and the virtual, the local and the global through creative and critical practice. The festival provides a platform for Irish-based artists and researchers to bring their work to new audiences so that collectively we can seek out original ways to navigate through our contemporary networked world. The exhibition takes place across three Dublin 8 venues:

ETHICS STUDIO – ADAPT / Beta
The AI Ethics Studio is a dedicated space for visitors, researchers, and artists to come together and explore our relationship with AI using alternative and creative methods and interactions. Created in partnership with the festival research partner – ADAPT the world-leading SFI Research Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology.

Focusing on the production and dissemination of musical scores that respond to the anxieties of climate collapse and mass disintegration, the duo explores how the news and social media cycles of crises affect our emotional and psychological response. Potato Internet – Caroline Sinders
When discussing alternatives for today’s extractive and toxic online world, the usual commentary is ‘but they don’t scale up’. But what if the future of the internet is all about scaling down? Potato Internet is a small scale, social network built from handy materials and e-waste.

Deliver – S. Harikrishnan and Paul O’ Neill
Deliver is an ongoing collaborative research project by S. Harikrishnan and Paul O’ Neill focusing on food delivery workers in Dublin within the context of digital culture and platform capitalism. As part of Beta festival, they will be exhibiting images documenting the social spaces created and occupied by delivery workers, and contrasting them with areas of the city where some of the most dominant tech companies of our networked era are based

Ent- — Libby Heaney
Ent is a 360-degree immersive installation taking quantum computing as both medium and subject matter. Supported by British Council Ireland.

Artistic research project dissecting the role of the screen as a central mediating force. Work in progress – part of the Beta x transmediale residency supported by the Arts Council.
RENDER ME TENDER —Nadia J. Armstrong
A 3D virtual avatar performance that reflects upon our digital dependencies and methods of online expression. Part of the Beta x transmediale residency supported by the Arts Council.
TAOTIE — Thomas Garnier
The new production sites of our accelerated contemporary world, the “dark factories” (or “lights-out factories”) are fully automated factories that operate without human intervention. Without even having to light the space, machines can now “work” day and night, without breaks, without compromising the quality of their production. These places with a basic architecture take the form of large, modular, repetitive warehouses where everything is designed to facilitate the movement of robots. Thomas Garnier proposes with Taotie an immersive installation which aims at questioning these new time-spaces of work and production. Can machines live without us in the dark?

Trespass — Katie Nolan
Trespass examines our digital culture as pharmakon, both poison and cure.
Data Centres in Ireland consume more than 30% of Ireland’s total electricity, complicating our nation’s ability to combat climate change at this time of anthropocentric environmental destruction. Filmed at an organic fruit farm in Co Waterford and secretly at a Data Centre in Dublin, the work points to the history of an orchard that once existed where this Data Centre now stands.

“The Ninth Muse” explores brain-machine interfacing’s creative and social implications, through the lens of ancient Greek mythology, 20th century surrealism and feminist strategies for countering corporate capture.

Bone of What Absent Thing (2021-22) — Elaine Hoey
In this contemporary retelling of the myth of Medusa, Elaine Hoey trains an artificial intelligence (AI) model with multiple narratives surrounding the ancient myth. Combining classical literature, academic text, fiction and personal writings, the AI shapes new narratives that questions violence towards women and the negative representation of the ‘monstrous’ female body.

Transition To Transcendence — Nikolas Ryan
‘Transition To Transcendence’ is an interactive, immersive installation which includes a VR element. It takes root in a profound exploration of my experience with Evangelical Queer Conversion Therapy, guided by Foucault’s insights on Biopolitics.
